Rose Lake FallsRose Lake Falls is a short day trip into the BWCA wilderness. This is a great trip for those new to canoeing as well as the more experienced. For the beginners, start at the public access at West Bearskin Lake on Clearwater Road or County Road #66. You will then canoe west down West Bearskin to the portage into Duncan Lake. Portage your canoe to Duncan and canoe to the northwest until you see the Rose Lake portage. Leave your canoe on Duncan and walk the portage, keep an eye on the right of the portage and you will come across the Rose Lake Falls. This portage is also known as “The Stairway Portage” due to the long set of steps from Rose Lake going towards Duncan. The canoe lover that wants to spend the day on the water can start from Golden Eagle Lodge and canoe west on Flour Lake to the Hungry Jack Portage. From Hungry Jack Lake, canoe north to the West Bearskin portage. Once you are on West Bearskin Lake, continue with the directions for the beginner’s trip. Plan on 2 hours from the West Bearskin parking lot for a one-way trip. Add an additional 2 hours to canoe from Golden Eagle Lodge, again one-way. These times are based on being experienced in a canoe with good weather conditions.
